2008-03-19  CLSharp171 Printer-Copier Evaluation

There is a new photocopier-printer available in the Clarendon in Room 171.  It is here for evaluation for approximately one month as part of a procurement of a number of printer-copiers for the Physics Department. A second, different, device for evaluation will be located in the Denys Wilkinson Building.  Everyone in Physics is encouraged to use both devices well and to give them a thorough test. The new devices offer both colour and monochrome printing and copying, scanning, using files from memory sticks and authenticated use, at your convenience, using your University card: files can be queued for printing in the CLSharp171 queue and then printed when you go to the printer and swipe your card.

The device in the Clarendon is a Sharp MX-5500N .  It is being served via a new server ,  pcounter.physics.ox.ac.uk , and is called CLSharp171.

You may access  CLSharp171  in the same way as any other printer substituting  pcounter  for  printserver or ppnt183 in the instructions for Accessing Printers in Physics for your particular operating system ( MS Windows , Linux or Mac ).

For managed Windows systems in the Physics domain the driver will be automatically downloaded from the pcounter server.

For other Windows systems, Windows 64-bit systems, Linux ( + other UNIX) systems and Mac OS X systems you may have to download the driver for the Sharp MX-5500N from the Sharp Web site.

The old CLcopier171 is broken and no longer on maintenance. You should remove CLcopier171 from your list of printers to avoid confusion.

Report any printing problems to  itsupport@physics.ox.ac.uk  .

Mechanical, paper and other operational problems should be reported to Hannah in Reception as with the old device. Other items should be recorded in the notebook beside the printer.

The CLSharp171 device operates as a scanner and can accept files to print from memory sticks. It is intended to make those functions fully automatic if possible and details will be released once recipes have been devised.

Miscellaneous notes:

(1) Linux:

The following recipe worked on an Ubuntu Linux system: it assumes that the Linux system is running a CUPS server.

Download and install the ppd “driver” for the Sharp MX-5500N printer before creating the print queue.

Follow the instructions on the Physics IT Web pages under “UNIX” for “Accessing Printers in Physics”.

Specify the printer name as pcounter/clsharp171 .

Setting up will involve specifying the make and type of printer: it will appear in drop-down lists if the ppd software for the Sharp MX-5500 has already been installed.

(2)  Mac:

Download and install the driver for the Sharp MX-5500N printer before creating the print queue.

(3)  Windows:

If you have to install a driver do so before creating the print queue on your system.

(4)  Printing:

To print your jobs from the CLSharp171 print queue do the following:

Select  2 on the Pcounter control panel.

Swipe your University card to login.

Your jobs will print automatically and then you will be logged out.

(5) Automatic Deletion from Queue:

N.B. Any jobs queued in the CLSharp171 print queue for more than 24hrs will be deleted automatically.
