Dr. Martin Bureau

Qualifications: B.Sc. (Université de Montréal), Ph.D. (The Australian National University)

Position: University Lecturer in Astrophysics

Departmental duties:

  • Senior demonstrator, first year "Optics" laboratory
  • Leader, "Galaxies" research group

Teaching duties:

  • Lecturer, third year "Stellar Structure and Evolution" course
  • M.Phys. and D.Phil. projects supervision
  • Tutorial Fellow in Physics at Wadham College

Research Interests:

My research centers on the formation and evolution of galaxies, primarily through detailed studies of (samples of) nearby galaxies, and it follows 3 main directions. First, studies of the dynamics and stellar populations of early-type galaxies (SAURON and Atlas3D projects), to constrain their formation processes and the relative importance of merging and dissipational processes. Second, studies of the structure and dynamics of barred disk galaxies, to constrain bar-driven evolution and bulge formation scenarios. Last, and taking an increasingly large fraction of my time, studies of the molecular gas content of early-type galaxies (incidence, morphology, dynamics, origin, etc), and its consequences for star formation.
