User Areas
Obtaining a user directory
User home directories are located at www.physics.ox.ac.uk/users/<user name>. The user will need to use their Physics Networking credentials to log in. Any member of the department who wishes to publish personal pages should email the physics webmaster to arrange to have their directory created and configured for their individual needs.
User directories will as standard be open for anybody to view. However, we can also limit access to just Physics or Oxford University only. We can also turn directory browsing on, although this is not recommended. As default, the homepage (first page hit) should be called index.htm.
Connecting to the web area for development
There are several methods of access to the webserver for development.
For user areas, the process has been simplified for other operating systems.
Windows users
Users can either use FrontPage/Expression/Sharepoint Designer and login to their web directly by selecting "Open Site" from the "File" menu (this is under Tools for Expression/Sharepoint Designer), then typing in the URL. This URL should then appear in the "Recent Webs" option (also in the "File" menu) when they reload FrontPage. As default FrontPage should try and reopen the last web accessed.
Alternatively, users with Centrally managed machines can access the folder via the Y:\ drive. The location should be:
Y:\web\users\<username> - eg. Y:\web\users\carslaw
Linux users
Linux users should be able to login via SFTP/SSH to winfe.physics.ox.ac.uk. The folder will need to be changed to:
\web\users\<your_name>
- and then files can be transferred.
MAC users
You just use the connect to server command in the finder (option-K) and connect to
https://winfe.physics.ox.ac.uk/web/users/<your_name>
Alternatively you can also point to a Samba share - eg:
smb://web2k03.physics.ox.ac.uk/users/<your_name>
