Postdoctoral Research Assistant (Atomic and Laser Physics)
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on an EPSRC-funded project within Atomic and Laser Physics to create and diagnose matter at TPa pressures. The role will be based in Clarendon Laboratory of the Department of Physics and will be supervised by Prof. Justin Wark. The post is available for a fixed-term duration of 48 months.
The project will use the National Ignition Facility at LLNL, the Omega Laser at LLE in upstate New York, and the Orion laser at AWE, to generate solid-state matter at hitherto unexplored pressures comparable to those at the centre of giant planets. High pressure states will be generated by ramped compression, leading to solid matter at TPa pressures for several nanoseconds, and will be interrogated using nanosecond X-ray diffraction. Complementary theoretical work will include target design and molecular dynamics simulations.
This is a joint project with the University of Edinburgh. This challenging and interdisciplinary project is suitable for a researcher interested in applying new techniques using the worlds most powerful lasers, with X-ray diffraction diagnosis and materials science, to understand matter at conditions that have previously never been interrogated on earth.
Applicants should possess, or be very close to obtaining a doctorate in, physics, materials science, or a related field. Previous experience in relevant research e.g. high power lasers, laser-plasma interactions, synchrotrons, or multi-scale material modelling will be an advantage.
