Application Deadline Order: Ascending   -   Descending

Post Doctoral Research Assistant   (Condensed Matter)

Applications are invited for a 36-month ERC-funded postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Physics, Gene Machines Group. The group is internationally known for developing advanced single-molecule fluorescence methods and applying them to studies of nucleic acid polymerases.

This project will focus on studying mechanisms of DNA replication and repair by bacterial DNA polymerases using single-molecule fluorescence. We are interested in capturing the real-time kinetics of DNA synthesis, and studying the localization, mobility and function of DNA polymerase in bacterial cells. The project will involve significant method development.

The PDRA should possess a doctorate in Optics/Photonics, Biophysics or Physical Chemistry, and expertise in nanotechnology, advanced microscopy and spectroscopy, single-molecule detection, and advanced data analysis. Experience in cleanroom-based nanofabrication, development of optical microscopes and development of data-analysis software is essential.

The candidate should have at least four first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals and be experienced in publishing scientific articles and reports.

Please direct informal inquiries to Dr Achilles Kapanidis (a.kapanidis1@physics.ox.ac.uk)

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online.

To apply, please visit www.recruit.ox.ac.uk (vacancy reference 102754).
Only applications received before midday 30 May 2012 can be considered.

You will be required to upload a curriculum vitae (with complete list of publications), a copy of two representative publications, a brief statement of research interests (describing how your past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position) and the names and addresses of three referees as part of your online application.

Application Deadline: 30 May 2012

Postdoctoral Research Assistant   (Condensed Matter)

Applications are invited for an EPSRC funded Post-Doctoral Research Assistant to work with Prof. Andrew Boothroyd and Dr D. Prabhakaran in the Clarendon Laboratory. The post is available for 30 months in the first instance, with the possibility for extension for a further 6 months.

The project is motivated by the large number of interesting and novel phases that have been recently found or predicted in systems that have very strong spin-orbit coupling. The research, which is collaborative between the Universities of Oxford and London (University College London), will involve materials preparation, crystal growth, and structural and magnetic characterisation of 5d oxides, especially iridates. There will also be the opportunity to participate in neutron and X-ray scattering experiments at international facilities to study magnetic and structural correlations.

The person appointed will be expected to play a leading role in the experimental programme, and be able to carry out collaborative experiments with other members of the groups in Oxford and London.

Applicants should have, or be very close to obtaining, a doctorate in a field related to the research area. Previous experience with solid state synthesis and flux growth of single crystals would be an advantage, and motivation and initiative are also important.

Please direct informal enquiries about this post to Prof. Andrew Boothroyd, +44 (0)1865 272225, a.boothroyd1@physics.ox.ac.uk.

To apply for this role and for further details please visit University jobs homepage (vacancy reference 102985).

Only applications received before midday 15 June 2012 can be considered. You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.

University Lecturer in Soft Functional Nanomaterials   (Condensed Matter)

The Department of Physics proposes to appoint a University Lecturer in Soft Functional Nanomaterials from 1 October 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will work at the Department of Physics, Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford, and will be offered a Non-Tutorial Fellowship at Wolfson College under arrangements described in the further particulars. The lecturer grade is Oxfords main academic grade; mechanisms are in place whereby the title of Professor may be conferred on lecturers of appropriate distinction. The combined university and college salary scale for the lecturer grade normally ranges from GBP 42,883 to 57,581. The appointment will be initially for five years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retirement age.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in a field relevant to Soft Functional Nanomaterials and a strong background in this area, including e.g. composites of organic or inorganic semiconducting materials or nano-scale objects. Research interests in the area of Soft Functional Nanomaterials and a proven research record of high quality at international level as well as a strong publication list are essential. Applicants whose research area is focused on the development, structure control and use of thin-film nano-or meso-scale architecture are especially encouraged to apply. It is expected that successful applicants establish links with related ongoing activities at Oxford in the areas of next-generation photovoltaics and energy storage, self-assembly, materials characterisation and modelling.

The appointed candidate will be expected to carry out research, to participate in the teaching and administrative work of the Physics Department and, as a Fellow of Wolfson College, to assist with its governance and the pastoral care of Graduate Students.

Further particulars, containing details of the application procedure and duties, may be obtained from below or from Ms Corinna Dahnke, email: corinna.dahnke@physics.ox.ac.uk or phone: +44 (0) 1865 272225.

The closing date for applications is 24 June 2012. Applicants should ensure that their referees send letters by this date.
Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
