FAQ - Eligibility of students

The British team competing in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO)

Students are required to satisfy one of the following criteria:

o   Attend a secondary school, sixth form or FE college within the UK
o   Hold UK citizenship and attend a school outside the UK
o   Attend a British international school.

Students attending schools outside of the UK must be able to fund their own travel expenses to the Oxford Training Camp in April.

Students who have finished their school examinations in the year of the competition can be members of the team as long as they have not commenced their university studies.

The age of the contestants should not exceed twenty years on June 30th of the year of the competition.

Contestants are not required to be UK citizens but must fulfil the above requirements.

Round 1: The BPO paper

Mature students may compete but will not be eligible for the International Physics Olympiad team.

Students must fulfil all remaining requirements stated above.

AS Challenge

Students are required to:

o   Attend a secondary school, sixth form or FE college within the UK
o   Hold UK citizenship and attend a school outside the UK
o   Attend a British international school.

Students who have finished their school examinations in the year of the competition can participate as long as they have not commenced their A2 or equivalent studies.

There is no upper age limit for the competition.

Contestants are not required to be UK citizens but must fulfil the above requirements.

Physics Challenge

Students are required to:

o   Attend a secondary school, sixth form or FE college within the UK
o   Hold UK citizenship and attend a school outside the UK
o   Attend a British international school.

Students who have finished their school examinations in the year of the competition can participate as long as they have not commenced their Key stage 4 / level 3 studies.

There is no upper age limit for the competition.

Contestants are not required to be UK citizens but must fulfil the above requirements.
