  • 26 November 2008 - A New Dimension: the Physics-Art Forum Click for larger image...

What inspires you about Physics? Are you inspired by the Arts? Have you ever wished you could be more creative, or look at Physics in a new light? 'A New Dimension' is a fun collaboration between Physicists and Artists providing the opportunity to explore physics/art and expand your creative thinking, connecting both departments at all levels. Undergraduates, graduates, tutors, academics - all are welcome.

I'm sure you are well aware of the famous Einstein quote, "Imagination is more important than knowledge", and the creative process certainly provides access to imagination.

There will be an introductory forum taking place on Tuesday 8th week (2nd Dec) at lunchtime as an initial collaboration between the art and physics departments to see how it will work best for everyone and what results people want to produce, as well as get together a team of people who would like to help run it all. It will certainly be a lively and fun discussion, including some creative exercises which will immediately introduce thinking from a different perspective! (Plus lunch will be provided!)

You need to contact abigail.schlageter@st-hildas.ox.ac.uk BY THIS FRIDAY (28th Nov) if you would like to come along to the introductory discussion!

The forums / workshops will take place at lunchtimes over the course of next term, culminating in a final showcase event where all creative pieces (including music, film, dance, paintings, poetry...) produced will be displayed in the DWB, with the possibility of a more permanent exhibit.

If you are interested in getting involved next term either as a participant or taking on a leadership role in this project and can't make it on Tuesday then please email: abigail.schlageter@st-hildas.ox.ac.uk and I will let you know a bit more about it all.

The Science and Technology Research Council (STFC) has a serious funding problem. We urge you to sign the Downing Street petition and to encourage as many of your friends and family as possible to do so.

You can learn more at this Daily Telegraph article or this High Energy Physics page at University College London.

These cuts will ultimately affect all physics departments, including ours. It will impact future generations of undergraduates and possibly those of you planning research careers in areas of physics supported by STFC.

Already over 11,000 people have signed including Stephen Hawking, Peter Higgs and many staff from this department.
