Opportunities for STFC Fellowships in Oxford

We are eager to act as host institution for Fellowships awarded by the UK Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) for research in experimental particle physics and particle astrophysics. A successful Fellow will be expected to participate in one of the components of our research programme (see our home page).

There are three types of Fellowship available:

1. Postdoctoral Fellowships are available for candidates with not more than 4 years postdoctoral experience. They are for a duration of 3 years.  Students are encouraged to apply, but should note that an award cannot be taken up until the PhD thesis in elementary particle physics (quarks, leptons, etc) has been submitted.

2. Advanced Fellowships are for candidates with at least two years postdoctoral experience who have demonstrated their ability as individual and independent research workers.  They are for a duration of 5 years.

3. Senior Research Fellowships will be awarded to your home Institution and you will continue to be an employee of that Institution. You are free to spend the period of your fellowship at any Institution acceptable to STFC.  Fellowships are awarded for up to 3 years, after which time you will be expected to return to your normal employment.  Applicants must already be a permanent member of a UK University or a similar UK academic Institution and should normally have completed 3 years in a permanent post at lecturer (or above) level.

Fellowships are open to qualified candidates without restriction of nationality or age.

Applications must be made through the sub-department and those interested should contact the head of the research group with which they wish to collaborate, or the sub-department secretary for further information (Sue Geddes).  Application deadline: The STFC deadline is in October.  Interested candidates should discuss their application with appropriate members of staff at Oxford and prepare draft proposals by the end of August.  The standard starting date for the fellowship is 1 October of the following year, and it may be postponed for a maximum of 6 months.

More information from STFC is available on http://www.stfc.ac.uk/Grants/Fells/SciTech/introduction.aspx or from  Clare Heseltine (clare.heseltine@stfc.ac.uk).

4. Daphne Jackson Fellowships - STFC is a sponsor of this Scheme, which is aimed at enabling high-level scientists and engineers to return to their professions following a career break owing to family commitments.  Further information is available under "Other Fellowships" at the above web site.
