Please look at this resource checklist for physics document which has useful information on electronic resources for your projects. You might also consider filling in this search checklist document and handing it in with your report, as it is a useful tool for supervisors and assessors when checking if students have searched scientific resources for their project work.

Announcements on the 2009 Physics Finals Exams

A. Reduced choice for short option papers (Physics only)

As of this year, each of the short-option papers will only contain 3 instead of 4 questions (as was the case in previous years), of which candidates are expected to answer 2 (the same as in previous years). This does not apply to the BT paper on Classical Mechanics for Physics and Philosophy candidates. This paper will still contain 4 questions of which Physics and Philosophy candidates are expected to answer 2.

B. Earlier date for the C6 "Theoretical Physics" Major option.

This year, the C6 4-th year major paper will take place at an earlier time on Friday of week 7 (June 12, 9.30 am - 12.30 pm).

C. 4th-year meetings with MPhys project assessors

The MPhys project meetings ("vivas") with the assessors have now been scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of 5th week (May 25 and 26). The precise times will be sent out to students in due course.

D. Examiners' policy on changes in the teaching of courses

The style of all the examination papers will reflect the manner in which the material has been covered in the lecture courses.

Supervision of BA Essays

There appears to be some confusion about the statement in the BA Projects & Essays handbook  that the supervisor may comment on only one draft. This statement should not be interpreted as precluding the supervisor from commenting on the outline of the essay. In fact, the supervisor should do this. The Examines are only anxious to avoid situations in which supervisors effectively write essays. Apart from commenting on the outline and one draft, exchanges at the weekly meetings  should be oral - what ideas the student is working with, what s/he doesn't understand etc., what other sources s/he might look at.

Frequently asked questions

B4:Mathematical Physics

Structure of B4:Mathematical Physics

This paper is set and marked by people in the Mathematical Institute. As last year, it will consist of two parts, A on Relativistic Covariance, and B on General Relativity. Each section will have 4 questions.

The content of Section A will be similar to the last 4 questions on the 2005 and 2006 B7 papers of the Maths School. Earlier papers in this series have a more restricted syllabus in that they do not include Lagrangians, but are otherwise relevant.

You can get credit for 4 questions, so long as they include at least one from each section. The Examiners will mark up to 5 questions, but will only count the best 4 answers that conform to the above rule. Clearly you should reckon on only answering 4 questions.

The content of Section B will be similar to the sections "General Relativity I" of the C1 and C2 papers in earlier years.

The marks produced by the Maths Examiners will be processed by the Physics Examiners alongside the raw marks of the other Physics options, as described in the Examination Conventions.

James Binney, Chairman of the Physics Examiners, 7/5/07

2. Calculators

The regulations regarding the use of calculators in maths exam papers this year (these should apply to candidates in any FHS taking such papers) can be found at http://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/notices/undergrad/2006/partB-note1.pdf (Pages 7, 8)

Calculators are not allowed for your B4: Mathematical Physics paper which is referred to as B7.2/C7.2 Relativity by the Mathematics Institute.
