Some Useful Formulae for Particle Size Distributions and their Optical Properties

Abstract:

A reference technical note collecting formulae for atmospheric particle size distributions and their optical properties. It includes definitions and worked derivations for commonly used analytic size distributions, moment relationships, effective radius and effective variance, aerosol optical properties, and quantities used in radiative-transfer and remote-sensing applications. The emphasis is on spherical or equivalent-spherical particles and on clearly specifying the conventions used for particle size distributions and optical quantities.
