New event!
We are excited to announce this new event dedicated to biophysics at the Department of Physics, University of Oxford. Join us for a day filled with hands-on activities and interactive sessions led by scientists working on cutting-edge research in the field. Additionally, there will be a chance to see inside our state-of-the-art labs and ask your questions to a panel of scientists. The day will provide valuable insights for students interested in this exciting field.
Why biophysics?
Physics helps us understand life. It explains how your heart beats, how your brain sends signals, and how living things work using the same ideas that describe forces, motion, and energy in the physical world.
At this event you will learn more about several important ideas in biophysics:
- Biophysicists study life at different scales: Biophysicists study life at many scales, from tiny molecules - like the motors that power your muscles - to cells, tissues, and even how groups of animals, such as flocks of birds or schools of fish, move together.
- We need special tools to see the invisible: Biophysicists invent and use powerful tools like microscopes, lasers, computers, and even AI to explore the hidden world inside living things, from individual molecules to entire organisms.
- Physics helps save lives: Biophysics helps us understand diseases, develop new medicines, and create life-saving technologies like MRI scanners.
- Biophysicists work together across different fields: Biophysics brings together experts from physics, biology, chemistry, and computing to solve big questions about life. By working as a team, biophysicists develop new technologies, make discoveries, and improve healthcare.
Who is this event for?
This event is for Year 10 students with a passion for physics and biology. Schools are invited to bring a group of 12-15 students.
As a positive action to address underrepresentation in physics, we will prioritise schools that can bring a group with at least 50% girls and those with a high percentage of students on free school meals or other circumstances where students would particularly benefit from attending. If you would like us to consider your school’s specific circumstances, please provide details in the booking form.
