Measurement of underlying event characteristics using charged particles in pp collisions at √s=900GeV and 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Physical Review D - Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology 83:11 (2011)
Abstract:
Measurements of charged particle distributions, sensitive to the underlying event, have been performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are based on data collected using a minimum-bias trigger to select proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 900 GeV and 7 TeV. The "underlying event" is defined as those aspects of a hadronic interaction attributed not to the hard scattering process, but rather to the accompanying interactions of the rest of the proton. Three regions are defined in azimuthal angle with respect to the highest transverse momentum charged particle in the event, such that the region transverse to the dominant momentum-flow is most sensitive to the underlying event. In each of these regions, distributions of the charged particle multiplicity, transverse momentum density, and average pT are measured. The data show generally higher underlying event activity than that predicted by Monte Carlo models tuned to pre-LHC data. © 2011 American Physical Society.Measurement of K+ production cross section by 8 GeV protons using high energy neutrino interactions in the SciBooNE detector

Search for production of heavy particles decaying to top quarks and invisible particles in pp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV.
Phys Rev Lett 106:19 (2011) 191801
Abstract:
We present a search for a new particle T' decaying to top quark via T' → t + X, where X is an invisible particle. In a data sample with 4.8 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at Fermilab in pp collisions with √s = 1.96 TeV, we search for pair production of T' in the lepton + jets channel, pp → tt + X + X → ℓνbqq'b + X + X. We interpret our results primarily in terms of a model where T' are exotic fourth generation quarks and X are dark matter particles. Current direct and indirect bounds on such exotic quarks restrict their masses to be between 300 and 600 GeV/c2, the dark matter particle mass being anywhere below m(T'). The data are consistent with standard model expectations, and we set 95% confidence level limits on the generic production of T'T' → tt + X + X. For the dark matter model we exclude T' at 95% confidence level up to m(T') = 360 GeV/c2 for m(X) ≤ 100 GeV/c2.Measurement of the neutrino mass splitting and flavor mixing by MINOS.
Phys Rev Lett 106:18 (2011) 181801
Abstract:
Measurements of neutrino oscillations using the disappearance of muon neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beam as observed by the two MINOS detectors are reported. New analysis methods have been applied to an enlarged data sample from an exposure of 7.25×10(20) protons on target. A fit to neutrino oscillations yields values of |Δm(2)|=(2.32(-0.08)(+0.12))×10(-3) eV(2) for the atmospheric mass splitting and sin(2)(2θ)>0.90 (90% C.L.) for the mixing angle. Pure neutrino decay and quantum decoherence hypotheses are excluded at 7 and 9 standard deviations, respectively.Measurements of direct CP violating asymmetries in charmless decays of strange bottom mesons and bottom baryons.
