Measurement of associated W + charm production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV
Journal of High Energy Physics Springer Berlin Heidelberg 1402:2 (2014) 013
Abstract:
Measurements are presented of the associated production of a W boson and a charm-quark jet (W + c) in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The analysis is conducted with a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5 fb−1, collected by the CMS detector at the LHC. W boson candidates are identified by their decay into a charged lepton (muon or electron) and a neutrino. The W + c measurements are performed for charm-quark jets in the kinematic region p jet T > 25 GeV, |ηjet| < 2.5, for two different thresholds for the transverse momentum of the lepton from the W-boson decay, and in the pseudorapidity range |ηℓ| < 2.1. Hadronic and inclusive semileptonic decays of charm hadrons are used to measure the following total cross sections: σ(pp → W + c + X) × B(W → ℓν) = 107.7 ± 3.3 (stat.) ± 6.9 (syst.) pb (p ℓ T > 25 GeV) and σ(pp → W + c + X)×B(W → ℓν) = 84.1 ± 2.0 (stat.) ± 4.9 (syst.) pb (p ℓ T > 35 GeV), and the cross section ratios σ(pp → W+ + ¯ c + X)/σ(pp → W− + c + X) = 0.954 ± 0.025 (stat.) ± 0.004 (syst.) (p ℓ T > 25 GeV) and σ(pp → W+ + ¯ c + X)/σ(pp → W− + c + X) = 0.938 ± 0.019 (stat.) ± 0.006 (syst.) (p ℓ T > 35 GeV). Cross sections and cross section ratios are also measured differentially with respect to the absolute value of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay. These are the first measurements from the LHC directly sensitive to the strange quark and antiquark content of the proton. Results are compared with theoretical predictions and are consistent with the predictions based on global fits of parton distribution functions.Measurement of beauty and charm production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA and measurement of the beauty-quark mass
Journal of High Energy Physics 2014:9 (2014) 1-56
Abstract:
Abstract: The production of beauty and charm quarks in ep interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for exchanged four-momentum squared 5 < Q2< 1000 GeV2using an integrated luminosity of 354 pb−1. The beauty and charm content in events with at least one jet have been extracted using the invariant mass of charged tracks associated with secondary vertices and the decay-length significance of these vertices. Differential cross sections as a function of Q2, Bjorken x, jet trans- verse energy and pseudorapidity were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The beauty and charm contributions to the proton structure functions were extracted from the double-differential cross section as a function of x and Q2. The running beauty-quark mass, mbat the scale mb, was determined from a QCD fit at next-to-leading order to HERA data for the first time and found to be mb(mb) = 4.07 ± 0.14 (fit)− 0.07+ 0.01(mod.)− 0.00+ 0.05(param.)− 0.05+ 0.08(theo.) © 2014, The Author(s).Abstract: Production of prompt J/ψ meson pairs in proton-proton collisions at (formula presented.) = 7 TeV is measured with the CMS experiment at the LHC in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 4.7 fb−1. The two J/ψ mesons are fully reconstructed via their decays into μ+μ− pairs. This observation provides for the first time access to the high-transverse-momentum region of J/ψ pair production where model predictions are not yet established. The total and differential cross sections are measured in a phase space defined by the individual J/ψ transverse momentum (pTJ/ψ) and rapidity (|yJ/ψ|): |yJ/ψ | < 1.2 for pTJ/ψ > 6.5 GeV/c; 1.2 < |yJ/ψ| < 1.43 for a pT threshold that scales linearly with |yJ/ψ| from 6.5 to 4.5 GeV/c; and 1.43 < |yJ/ψ| < 2.2 for pTJ/ψ > 4.5 GeV/c. The total cross section, assuming unpolarized prompt J/ψ pair production is 1.49 ± 0.07 (stat) ±0.13 (syst) nb. Different assumptions about the J/ψ polarization imply modifications to the cross section ranging from −31% to +27%.Search for new physics in events with same-sign dileptons and jets in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV
Journal of High Energy Physics 2014:1 (2014)
Abstract:
A search for new physics is performed based on events with jets and a pair of isolated, same-sign leptons. The results are obtained using a sample of proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb-1. In order to be sensitive to a wide variety of possible signals beyond the standard model, multiple search regions defined by the missing transverse energy, the hadronic energy, the number of jets and b-quark jets, and the transverse momenta of the leptons in the events are considered. No excess above the standard model background expectation is observed and constraints are set on a number of models for new physics, as well as on the same-sign top-quark pair and quadruple-top-quark production cross sections. Information on event selection efficiencies is also provided, so that the results can be used to confront an even broader class of new physics models.
