Abstract
One of the remarkable properties of superstring/M theory is the physical interpretation of special kinds of singularities in space in terms of interacting quantum field theories. After reviewing the framework and the simplest examples of these I will go on to explain how one can understand properties of interacting conformal theories in five dimensions. Then I will demonstrate that the M-theory framework exhibits a parameter, which leads to massive confining theories in 5d. These systems may contain novel dark matter candidates.
