Join the University of Oxford alumni community in April for Meeting Minds Global, our three-day virtual event, bringing alumni and associates together from around the world.

We are hosting one physic-specific event, to compliment the main programme. See details below.

The main programme will have a variety of engaging live talks and panels, plus hands-on interactive sessions, including:

  • Hear from our astrophysicist colleagues on the latest news from the James Webb telescope
  • Take part on a talk by leading physicists to learn how Nuclear Physics can benefit society and how we are pushing the boundaries, you will have a chance to ask all the questions you have on this topic (see below).
  • Meet and chat with fellow physicists, online, with the new 'networking' and/or 'discussion' sessions.
  • Tomi Makanjuola (Queen's, 2010) will lead through starting with vegan cookery
  • Take a virtual tour of the Magdalen Old Library
  • Ask the Vice-Chancellor your questions
  • Learn how to build your own start-up ...and so much more!

Booking is now open for all University of Oxford alumni. Click button below.

Physics specific event (online):

‘Overcoming the obstacles to fusion power – the taming of plasma instabilities’

Wednesday 6 April – 5pm GMT, by Prof Peter Norreys.

Abstract:

On 9th February 2022, EUROFusion scientists working on the JET facility at the Culham Science Centre announced a record 59 MJ of heat energy obtained from fusion reactions. Both of these remarkable achievements point the way forward for fusion power as an energy source and validate governments’ sustained investments in the science and technology of both approaches to fusion energy. In this talk, I will highlight the commonalities between inertially and magnetically confined energy concepts, and highlight the synergies between them, as we move towards a net-zero carbon economy from the middle of the 21st century onwards.

The talk will be followed by Q&A session with other members of the department.

And afterwards, don’t forget to head to the Discussions area in the Community tab to carry on the conversation with other registrants via video and chat after your favourite sessions finish. This is a new tool. To make sure you get the notification for these, register for all the talks you are interested.

* Save the date in your diary for September: The 15th anniversary of Meeting Minds will be held from 16–18 September with some very special speakers and guests. We hope this will be a hybrid event, if the situation allows, so keep an eye!

The Meeting Minds events are organised by the central Alumni Office of the University of Oxford.
