Abstract

For the inaugural cross-TP "journal club" Georges Obied and Andrew Mummery will discuss a recent avalanche of papers in the fields of theoretical astrophysics and physics beyond the standard model resulting from observations of the "BOAT" (Brightest Of All Time) gamma ray burst, catchily named GRB-221009A.

The punchline of the papers is an attempt to explain the detection of photons from the event at energies ~ 10's of TeV, which are hard to understand without physics beyond the standard model (or detector effects). The aim of this session is to have a discussion about the various beyond the standard model phenomena which could plausibly explain the data.

Andrew will begin by introducing the source GRB-221009A, and the astrophysics of the event. Georges will then lead to discussion on beyond the standard model physics.
