Abstract

I will discuss how the laws of thermodynamics apply to microscopic systems, where fluctuations are prevalent. The talk will focus on a milestone paper by C. Jarzynski [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 2690 (1997)], that announced the discovery of a universal relation for work fluctuations, known today as Jarzynski equality.
