A British Physics Olympiad event run in collaboration with Oxford Physics and G-Research
Event for students in Year 10
The Year 10 BPhO Physics Taster Day is an event aimed at encouraging state school students to study Physics at A-level. The day provides students with an opportunity to discuss physics ideas, problem solving, observational and practical skills and to meet other keen students of physics.
Specifically the day will include:
- A problem-solving workshops
- A talk about an area of current physics research
- Practical experiments and demonstrations
- Advice on applying to study physics at University
- Information about careers in physics
Students will be guided through the problem solving process, and will solve a range of unusual problems with help and guidance.
Who is the event for?
The event is open to UK students in Year 10 at state (non-fee-paying) schools, who are interested in studying A levels (or equivalent) in Maths and Physics. If the event becomes over-subscribed, we will prioritise students from under-represented backgrounds.
The Year 10 students will attend the event on their own.
Refreshments
Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

- The application deadline is 23:59 on Fri 22 May 2026.
- We will inform you about the outcome of your application on Tue 26 May 2026.
- You will then have until the Mon 1 Jun 2026 to confirm your place and complete a series of problems on Isaac Physics .
The British Physics Olympiad
The British Physics Olympiad was founded in 1982 with the aim of selecting and coaching a team to attend an International Physics Olympiad. Last year there were some 40,000 school students in the UK engaged in the competitions from Year 10 upwards, with the dual aim of building students' confidence in physics through their participation in national physics competitions, whilst challenging the problem solvers through the challenge competitions.
