Name: Shuxiang Cao
Job title: Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellow

What are you currently working on?
My projects are centered around combining artificial intelligence with quantum computing. The key of my work focuses on improving the control of superconducting quantum processors with AI. This enhancement may pave the way for the development of better quantum computers and the realisation of practical quantum applications.

Describe a typical day
A typical day for me starts with breakfast and a quick look at the latest scientific papers on arXiv. I'll either go to the lab or do my experiments from home depending on my schedule and the weather. I try to finish working by 6pm to have some time to relax in the evening,  but this doesn't always go as planned.

If you had an entire day at your disposal (not at work), what would be your ideal way to spend it?
I would love to spend my free time with my friends, maybe throwing a party or playing video games together. But I also like getting outside and going for a hike to embrace nature.

What is your favourite place in Oxford?
My top place in Oxford is The White Rabbit. They serve some of the best pizzas I have ever tasted, and the owner is super friendly.

What discovery would you like to see in your lifetime?
One thing I'm really looking forward to seeing is fault-tolerant quantum computers become a reality. I hope these advances can boost AI development and bring about real-world applications. In a parallel universe where I wasn't researching quantum computing, I could see myself working for an IT company, using AI to tackle real-world problems.
