Professor Simon Hooker has been selected to become an American Physical Society Fellow for his pioneering contributions to the development of plasma-based, high-power optical waveguides and their application to laser-driven plasma accelerators.

The APS Fellowship Program was created to recognise members who have made advances in physics through original research and publication, or made significant innovative contributions in the application of physics to science and technology. Members may also be awarded fellowship for significant contributions to the teaching of physics or service and participation in the activities of the APS.

‘This is wonderful recognition and richly deserved,’ comments Professor Ian Shipsey, Head of the Department of Physics. ‘Simon is an exceptional physicist and a highly valued colleague. He plays an integral role in department life and is a respected leader in his field.'
