Professor Alexander Lvovsky has been named a 2025 American Physical Society Fellow for pioneering contributions to the technology of preparation, manipulation, characterisation, and storage of quantum states of light for applications in quantum information processing and communication.

The APS Fellowship Program was created to recognise members who have made advances in physics through original research and publication, or made significant innovative contributions in the application of physics to science and technology. Members may also be awarded fellowship for significant contributions to the teaching of physics or service and participation in the activities of the APS.

Professor Lvovsky comments: ‘Being elected an APS Fellow acknowledges that my team’s results in quantum optics and optical neural networks, as well as our educational outreach efforts are not just personal milestones, but significant steps toward scalable quantum technologies, faster and greener computers and more accessible education in science.’

‘I am delighted that Alex has been awarded this fellowship,’ comments Professor Andrew Boothroyd, Head of Department. ‘Not only is he a pioneer in his field – founding a spin-off company, Lumai along the way – he is also committed to supporting the next generation of physicists with his innovative and large-scale, long-term outreach project, the Comprehensive Oxford Mathematics and Physics Online School (COMPOS). He is a respected physicist and a highly valued colleague – congratulations!’
