Professor Michael Johnston has been made a 2022 Fellow of the American Physical Society for the development of a new platform for terahertz photonics based on semiconductor nanowires. Recommended for the honour by the American Physical Society Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics (FIAP), it is a prestigious recognition by his peers of the outstanding contributions he has made to physics.

Professor Johnston joined the University of Oxford’s Department of Physics in 2002. He established and currently leads a research group specialising in semiconductor physics, photovoltaics and terahertz photonics. He has developed THz methods to study the electronic properties of nanomaterials, created new high efficiency vapour-deposited solar cells and invented novel THz emitters, modulators and receivers.

‘It is indeed a great honour and I am absolutely delighted,’ confirms Professor Johnston. ‘It is a privilege being able to work in an area of science that has the potential to positively impact society and the way we all live and also to have worked with exceptional colleagues over the years.’

‘This recognition is richly deserved,’ adds Professor Ian Shipsey, head of the Department of Physics at Oxford. ‘Michael has led Oxford’s terahertz photonics work and continues to pave the way in the field. Congratulations!’
