Abstract:

The difference in the angular distributions between beauty quarks and antiquarks, referred to as the charge asymmetry, is measured for the first time in bb pair production at a hadron collider. The data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) collected at 7 TeV center-of-mass energy in proton-proton collisions with the LHCb detector. The measurement is performed in three regions of the invariant mass of the bb system. The results obtained are A(C)(bb))(40 105 GeV/c(2)) = 1.6 ± 1.7 ± 0.6%, where A(C)(bb)) is defined as the asymmetry in the difference in rapidity between jets formed from the beauty quark and antiquark, where in each case the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The beauty jets are required to satisfy 2 < η < 4, E(T) >20 GeV, and have an opening angle in the transverse plane Δ ϕ > 2.6 rad. These measurements are consistent with the predictions of the standard model.

The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 nb-1. The (Formula presented.) mesons of transverse momenta up to 15 GeV/c are reconstructed in the dimuon decay mode. The rapidity coverage in the centre-of-mass system is 1.5 < y < 4.0 (forward region) and -5.0 < y < -2.5 (backward region). The forward-backward production ratio and the nuclear modification factor for (Formula presented.)(1S) mesons are determined. The data are compatible with the predictions for a suppression of (Formula presented.) (1S) production with respect to proton-proton collisions in the forward region, and an enhancement in the backward region. The suppression is found to be smaller than in the case of prompt (Formula presented.) mesons.

Abstract:

Using a proton-proton collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb-1 collected by LHCb at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, about 3800 Ξ0b Ξ+cπ-, Ξc+ pK-π+ signal decays are reconstructed. From this sample, the first measurement of the Ξ0b baryon lifetime is made, relative to that of the Λ0b baryon. The mass differences M(Ξ0b) - M(Λ0b) and M(Ξc+) - M(Λc+) are also measured with precision more than 4 times better than the current world averages. The resulting values are (Equation presented) where the first factor is the ratio of fragmentation fractions, b Ξ0b relative to b Λ0b. Relative production rates as functions of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are also presented.
