From 2022 to 2024, Matthew Wright served as The Royal Meteorological Society’s (RMetS) Energy Science Engagement Fellow, a role dedicated to bridging the gap between climate science and the energy sector. During the Fellowship, Matthew led engagement efforts to enhance the use of meteorological and climate data in energy decision-making, with a particular focus on extreme weather risks, seasonal variability, and long-term climate trends. This work involved collaboration with academics, policymakers and industry stakeholders, and continues to inform discussions on energy system planning and the risks climate change poses to energy infrastructure.
A key output of this work was the State of the Climate for the UK Energy Sector 2023/24 report, which provides a comprehensive assessment of how recent climate variability and long-term trends are impacting UK energy systems. This annual report highlights critical developments in wind, solar, temperature, and extreme weather events, alongside their implications for energy security, demand forecasting, and infrastructure resilience.
The latest edition of the report, published by RMetS, can be accessed here: State of the Climate for the UK Energy Sector 2023/24.
