Particle Physics New Year Lecture

Join the Particle Physics New Year's Lecture hosted by Professor Daniela Bortoletto, Head of Particle Physics, in the Martin Wood Lecture Theatre at the Department of Physics in Oxford and online via Zoom. Professor Bortoletto will introduce distinguished speaker, Professor Hitoshi Murayama from UC Berkeley, whose talk will be followed by a round table facilitated by, among others, Professors Philip Burrows, Kimberly Palladino, Gavin Salam FRS and Guy Wilkinson FRS from the Department of Physics.

Guest speaker: Professor Hitoshi Murayama

The Higgs boson, discovered at the world's largest particle collider LHC years ago, is a very special particle. We need to study it in great detail to answer key questions of physics. The Higgs boson may have been a super hero that saved us from complete annihilation and it can be the portal to a new world of particles with possible links to dark matter and dark energy. In this talk, Professor Murayama discusses the fascinating exploration of a future particle physics era with the help of a new collider.

Round table: does the world need a new collider and why?

The talk will be followed by a round table to discuss the need for a new collider, the discoveries that could be made and the different options that are on the table.
