QFX has recently closed a £2 million seed funding round and has appointed industry leaders to drive development of next generation modular quantum technologies. QFX builds on world-leading trapped ion quantum computing research at the University of Oxford’s Department of Physics and was founded by Associate Professor Joe Goodwin alongside several researchers from his group. The funding will support QFX’s mission to deliver scalable quantum technologies for computing, sensing, and secure communications.
Key appointments have been confirmed following the funding news: Associate Professor Goodwin is Chief Technology Officer for QFX while co-founders Dr Laurent Stephenson and Dr Peter Drmota have been named Chief Scientific Officer and Chief Innovation Officer respectively. Fellow alumnus from Oxford’s Department of Physics Dr Timothy Ballance has been appointed Chief Executive Officer.
‘Congratulations to the team at QFX,’ comments Phillip Tait, Innovation and Enterprise Manager at the Department of Physics. ‘Quantum computing is a particular strength here at Oxford and our research is playing a key role in harnessing and realising its potential. Investment of this scale is testament to this and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for QFX.’
Last month, another spinout from the Department of Physics, Oxford Ionics, made headlines following its acquisition by US company IonQ for $1.075 billion – making it the University’s highest-value quantum computing spinout.
