Black Hole

Lensing of space time around a black hole. At Oxford we study black holes observationally and theoretically on all size and time scales - it is some of our core work.

My research centres on galaxies. I focus on detailed observational studies of the structure, dynamics, stellar populations, black holes, and interstellar medium of (samples of) primarily nearby objects, to tease out insights about their evolution and probe fascinating physics. I work across the electromagnetic spectrum and have a particular affinity for integral-field spectrographs and synthesis/interferometric imaging, that yield powerful three-dimensional datasets, but I also occasionally dabble in theoretical/numerical work.

Current favourites include weighing the supermassive black holes lurking at galaxy centres, unraveling the states of giant molecular clouds where stars are born, and elucidating the nature of galaxies when our universe was only half its current age.
