I grew up Swadlincote, a small ex-coal mining town in Derbyshire. I read Physics with Astrophysics at the University of Birmingham, graduating in 1997. I then went on to do a DPhil in Astrophysics at Oxford. After postdoctoral positions at Leiden and Oxford, I took up a lectureship at the University of Hertfordshire in 2007 then moved back to Oxford in 2012 as Associate Professor. I've held a visiting SKA Professorship at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa since 2010. In recent years I have devoted more and more time to initiatives to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in Physics and the wider University. In 2020 I became an Associate Head of MPLS Division for People. When not working you can usually find me playing or watching sport.
