Abstract:

Micropatterned gas detectors like GEMs and MICROMEGAS are being considered for time projection chambers (TPC) for linear collider experiments. These devices are made mainly of Kapton insulators and thick copper layers. Because in the micropatterned gas detectors a dense plasma of avalanche electrons and ions are created in a small volume, aging due to polymerization is a concern. A shot-term aging study on a single GEM foil produced by 3M using reel-to-reel flex circuit technology is reported.

Abstract:

We present a measurement of the mass difference m(Ds+) -m(D+), where both the Ds+ and D+ are reconstructed in the φπ+ decay channel. This measurement uses 11.6 pb-1 of data collected by CDF II using the new displaced-track trigger. The mass difference is found to be m(D s+)-m(D+) = 99.41±0.38(stat) ±0.21(syst) MeV/c2. copy; 2003 The American Physical Society.

Negative ion drift gas mixtures in GEM detector application to axion → γγ search

Abstract:

We report on preliminary tests of a 2×2 cm2 GEM detector in a negative ion drift chamber. Stability and gas gain results for several negative ion gas mixtures are reported. The micro-structured detectors work reliably in negative ion gas mixtures based on CS2 and achieve gains comparable with those obtained in conventional electron drift gases.

Stellar astrophysics in the local group and beyond with the GTC

Revista Mexicana de Astronomia y Astrofisica: Serie de Conferencias 16 (2003) 145-149

Abstract:

In this review I discuss the capabilities that the GTC, and in particular the OSIRIS spectrometer, will bring to studying massive stellar populations within Local Group galaxies and even beyond. By observing massive stars in other dwarf irregular and spiral galaxies one can probe star formation and stellar evolution in extreme environments, the wind properties of massive luminous stars, and determine distances to an accuracy of ∼10%.
