Measurement of the Λb cross section and the Λ-b to Λb ratio with J/ψΛ decays in pp collisions at s=7 TeV

Abstract:
The Λb differential production cross section and the cross section ratio σ(Λ-b)/σ(Λb) are measured as functions of transverse momentum pTΛb and rapidity |yΛb| in pp collisions at s=7 TeV using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurements are based on Λb decays reconstructed in the exclusive final state J/ψΛ, with the subsequent decays J/ψ→μ+μ- and Λ→pπ, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb-1. The product σ(Λb)×B(Λb→J/ψΛ) versus pTΛb falls faster than that of b mesons. The measured value of σ(Λb)×B(Λb→J/ψΛ) for pTΛb>10 GeV and |yΛb|<2.0 is 1.16±0.06±0.12nb, and the integrated σ(Λ-b)/σ(Λb) ratio is 1.02±0.07±0.09, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. © 2012 CERN.Search for narrow resonances in dilepton mass spectra in pp collisions at s=7TeV

Abstract:
A search for narrow, high-mass resonances decaying to electron or muon pairs has been performed using pp collision data collected at s=7TeV by the CMS experiment in 2011. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 5 fb -1. The event yields observed in the signal regions are consistent with predictions of the standard model backgrounds, and upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction for a resonance decaying to dileptons are extracted from a shape analysis of the dilepton invariant mass distribution. The resulting mass limits at 95% confidence level are 2330 GeV for the Z ' in the Sequential Standard Model, 2000 GeV for the superstring-inspired Z ψ' resonance, 890 (540) GeV for the Stueckelberg extension Z St' with the mass parameter ε=0.06 (0.04), and 2140 (1810) GeV for Kaluza-Klein gravitons with the coupling parameter k/M- Pl of 0.10 (0.05). Abstract:
A search for production of supersymmetric particles in final states containing jets, missing transverse momentum, and at least one hadronically decaying τ lepton is presented. The data were recorded by the ATLAS experiment in s=7TeV proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. No excess above the Standard Model background expectation was observed in 2.05fb-1 of data. The results are interpreted in the context of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models with Mmess=250TeV, N5=3, μ>0, and Cgrav=1. The production of supersymmetric particles is excluded at 95% C.L. up to a supersymmetry breaking scale Λ=30TeV, independent of tanβ, and up to Λ=43TeV for large tanβ. © 2012.Revisiting a fundamental test of the disc instability model for X-ray binaries

Abstract:
We revisit a core prediction of the disc instability model (DIM) applied to X-ray binaries. The model predicts the existence of a critical mass-transfer rate, which depends on disc size, separating transient and persistent systems. We therefore selected a sample of 52 persistent and transient neutron star and black hole X-ray binaries and verified if the observed persistent (transient) systems do lie in the appropriate stable (unstable) region of parameter space predicted by the model. We find that, despite the significant uncertainties inherent to these kinds of studies, the data are in very good agreement with the theoretical expectations. We then discuss some individual cases that do not clearly fit into this main conclusion. Finally, we introduce the transientness parameter as a measure of the activity of a source and show a clear trend of the average outburst recurrence time to decrease with transientness in agreement with the DIM predictions. We therefore conclude that, despite difficulties in reproducing the complex details of the light curves, the DIM succeeds in explaining the global behaviour of X-ray binaries averaged over a long enough period of time. © 2012 The Authors.
