Abstract:

We describe a simple scheme, truncated-channel injection, to inject electrons directly into the wakefield driven by a high-intensity laser pulse guided in an all-optical plasma channel. We use this approach to generate dark-current-free 1.2 GeV, 4.5% relative energy spread electron bunches with 120 TW laser pulses guided in a 110 mm-long hydrodynamic optical-field-ionized plasma channel. Our experiments and particle-in-cell simulations show that high-quality electron bunches were only obtained when the drive pulse was closely aligned with the channel axis, and was focused close to the density down ramp formed at the channel entrance. Start-to-end simulations of the channel formation, and electron injection and acceleration show that increasing the channel length to 410 mm would yield 3.65 GeV bunches, with a slice energy spread ∼5×10^{-4}.

Abstract:

An electron-positron collider designed for precision studies of the Higgs boson, a so-called Higgs factory is the highest-priority next collider of the particle physics community. This contribution summarises the key physics goals of such a Higgs factory and reviews the status of the various proposed realisations from mature concepts to very recent ideas. The commonalities and special advantages of circular and linear approaches will be discussed, respectively, before highlighting some recent developments regarding the key technologies, the operation scenarios and sustainability aspects for future colliders.Comment: 9 pages, contribution to proceedings of EPS-HEP 202

Abstract:

The exclusive photoproduction reactions γp → J/ψ(1S)p and γp → ψ(2S)p have been measured at an ep centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 373 pb−1. The measurement was made in the kinematic range 30 < W < 180 GeV, Q2< 1 GeV2 and |t| < 1 GeV2, where W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy, Q2 is the photon virtuality and t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The decay channels used were J/ψ(1S) → μ+μ−, ψ(2S) → μ+μ− and ψ(2S) → J/ψ(1S)π+π− with subsequent decay J/ψ(1S) → μ+μ−. The ratio of the production cross sections, R = σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ(1S), has been measured as a function of W and |t| and compared to previous data in photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering and with predictions of QCD-inspired models of exclusive vector-meson production, which are in reasonable agreement with the data.
