My research interests

I'm Matthew, a PhD student in Arzhang's group. My research centres around using transport to learn about interacting quantum systems. My two major interests are molecular electronics and topological insulators. In the first of these I am developing fabrication techniques to reliably produce single molecule nanodevices, in order to study their behaviour under strong coupling. In the second, I am using a combination of transport and DFT simulations in order to study the surface states of the correlated topological insulator SmB6.

Some questions I'm currently interested in:

  • Can molecular electronic devices be assembled en masse without resorting to mechanically controlled break junction techniques?
  • What is the nature of transport through strongly interacting molecular devices? Can we observe Kondo effect in molecules with free spins?
  • What is the orbital content of topological surface states? How can we use surface modification to study the electronic states?
  • What is the effect of electron-electron interaction on the surface state properties in SmB6?
