Abstract:

SBND is the near detector of the Short-Baseline Neutrino program at Fermilab. Its location near to the Booster Neutrino Beam source and relatively large mass will allow the study of neutrino interactions on argon with unprecedented statistics. This paper describes the expected performance of the SBND photon detection system, using a simulated sample of beam neutrinos and cosmogenic particles. Its design is a dual readout concept combining a system of 120 photomultiplier tubes, used for triggering, with a system of 192 X-ARAPUCA devices, located behind the anode wire planes. Furthermore, covering the cathode plane with highly-reflective panels coated with a wavelength-shifting compound recovers part of the light emitted towards the cathode, where no optical detectors exist. We show how this new design provides a high light yield and a more uniform detection efficiency, an excellent timing resolution and an independent 3D-position reconstruction using only the scintillation light. Finally, the whole reconstruction chain is applied to recover the temporal structure of the beam spill, which is resolved with a resolution on the order of nanoseconds

Abstract:

Abstract We report measurements of the flux-integrated ν̅μ and ν̅μ + νμ charged-current cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets using the T2K anti-neutrino beam with a mean beam energy of 0.86 GeV. The signal is defined as the (anti-)neutrino charged-current interaction with one induced $\mu^\pm$ and no detected charged pion or proton. These measurements are performed using a new WAGASCI module recently added to the T2K setup in combination with the INGRID Proton Module. The phase space of muons is restricted to the high-detection efficiency region, $p_{\mu}>400~{\rm MeV}/c$ and $\theta_{\mu}<30^{\circ}$, in the laboratory frame. An absence of pions and protons in the detectable phase spaces of $p_{\pi}>200~{\rm MeV}/c$, $\theta_{\pi}<70^{\circ}$ and $p_{\rm p}>600~{\rm MeV}/c$, $\theta_{\rm p}<70^{\circ}$ is required. In this paper, both the $\overline{\nu}_\mu$ cross-sections and $\overline{\nu}_\mu+\nu_\mu$ cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets and their ratios are provided by using the D’Agostini unfolding method. The results of the integrated $\overline{\nu}_\mu$ cross-section measurements over this phase space are $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}=(1.082\pm0.068(\rm stat.)^{+0.145}_{-0.128}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, $\sigma_{\rm CH}=(1.096\pm0.054(\rm stat.)^{+0.132}_{-0.117}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, and $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}/\sigma_{\rm CH} = 0.987\pm0.078(\rm stat.)^{+0.093}_{-0.090}(\rm syst.)$. The $\overline{\nu}_\mu+\nu_\mu$ cross-section is $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O} = (1.155\pm0.064(\rm stat.)^{+0.148}_{-0.129}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, $\sigma_{\rm CH}=(1.159\pm0.049(\rm stat.)^{+0.129}_{-0.115}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, and $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}/\sigma_{\rm CH}=0.996\pm0.069(\rm stat.)^{+0.083}_{-0.078}(\rm syst.)$.

Abstract:

Abstract Jet substructure has provided new opportunities for searches and measurements at the LHC, and has seen continuous development since the optimization of the large-radius jet definition used by ATLAS was performed during Run 1. A range of new inputs to jet reconstruction, pile-up mitigation techniques and jet grooming algorithms motivate an optimisation of large-radius jet reconstruction for ATLAS. In this paper, this optimisation procedure is presented, and the performance of a wide range of large-radius jet definitions is compared. The relative performance of these jet definitions is assessed using metrics such as their pileup stability, ability to identify hadronically decaying W bosons and top quarks with large transverse momenta. A new type of jet input object, called a ‘unified flow object’ is introduced which combines calorimeter- and inner-detector-based signals in order to achieve optimal performance across a wide kinematic range. Large-radius jet definitions are identified which significantly improve on the current ATLAS baseline definition, and their modelling is studied using pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at $$\sqrt{s}=13~\text {TeV}$$ s = 13 TeV during 2017.

Abstract:

It has been proposed that, beside the known resonance with mass $m_h=$ 125 GeV, the Higgs field might exhibit a second resonance with a larger mass $(M_H)^{\rm Theor} = 690 \pm 10 ~({\rm stat}) \pm 20 ~({\rm sys})$ GeV which, however, would couple to longitudinal W's with the same typical strength as the low-mass state at $125$ GeV and thus represent a relatively narrow resonance. Looking for evidences in the LHC data, from two analyses published in 2021 by ATLAS (searching for heavy resonances decaying into final states with 4 charged leptons or with photon pairs) we have found combined indications for a new resonance of mass $(M_H)^{\rm Exp} \sim $ 680 (15) GeV and total width $(\Gamma_H)^{\rm Exp} \sim$ 45 (15) GeV. More recent results by CMS (searching for heavy resonances decaying into a pair of h(125) Higgs bosons or looking for high-mass photon pairs produced in pp-diffractive scattering) also show definite excesses pointing toward a new resonance of mass $(M_H)^{\rm Exp} \sim$ 660(30) GeV. However, beside the agreement with the predicted mass range, a clean indication derives from the ATLAS 4-lepton data which reproduce to high accuracy the expected correlation between resonating peak cross section $\sigma_R(pp\to H \to 4l)$ and the ratio $\gamma_H=\Gamma_H/M_H$. This correlation is mainly determined by the lower mass $m_h=$ 125 GeV and supports the view that the known $m_h$ and the new heavy resonance are two different excitations of the same Higgs field by effectively eliminating the spin-zero vs. spin-2 ambiguity in the interpretation of the heavy state. The overall statistical evidence might now be above the traditional 5-sigma discovery threshold because, when comparing with a definite theoretical prediction as in our case, local excesses should maintain intact their statistical significance and not be downgraded by the so called "look-elsewhere" effect.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 4 table
