Professor Peter NorreysPeter Norreys is Professor of Inertial Fusion Science at the University of Oxford and is a William Penney Fellow of AWE. His current research interests include Raman amplification in plasma and investigating new methods of adding additional energy to the hot spot in ICF implosions at the National Ignition Facility, on which he is closely collaborating with AWE and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Peter Norreys has continued to coordinate the postgraduate teaching of PhD students at the University of Oxford, in collaboration with Imperial College London and the University of Warwick. He has overseen the delivery for the fourth year of the Centre for Postgraduate Training in Plasma Physics and High Energy Density Science and enrolled the 90th PhD student into the program in the academic year 2017-18. The course comprises interlinked lectures delivered in a number of workshops and schools to teach students the fundamentals of the subject, alongside to the immersion into their PhD projects. Students are also encouraged to participate in lecture courses delivered in the Department of Physics and the Mathematical Institute.

Peter Norreys also delivered a new course on the MMathPhys degree (Quantum Processes in Hot Plasmas) in the 2017-18 academic year, together with Professor Steven Rose. He is preparing a new 16-lecture module on High Energy Density Science for delivery in the Hilary Term 2019. The Oxford Physics’ MMathPhys course will then provide Master’s students to the most cutting edge topics in high energy density plasma physics research now being undertaken within the Department of Physics.
