Galaxy Zoo: Multimergers and the Millennium Simulation

Abstract:
We present a catalogue of 39 multiple mergers, found using the mergers catalogue of the Galaxy Zoo project for z < 0.1, and compare them to corresponding semi-analytical galaxies from the Millennium Simulation. We estimate the (volume-limited) multimerger fraction of the local Universe using our sample and find it to be at least 2 orders of magnitude less than binary mergers - in good agreement with the simulations (especially the Munich group). We then investigate the properties of galaxies in binary mergers and multimergers (morphologies, colours, stellar masses and environment) and compare these results with those predicted by the semi-analytical galaxies. We find that multimergers favour galaxies with properties typical of elliptical morphologies and that this is in qualitative agreement with the models. Studies of multimergers thus provide an independent (and largely corroborating) test of the Millennium semi-analytical models. © 2011 The Authors Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society © 2011 RAS.HARMONI: A first light spectrograph for the E-ELT

Abstract:
We describe the current status of the HARMONI instrument design, which will form the basis for the first-light integral field spectrograph on the European Extremely Large Telescope. We review the phase A design, and highlight current on-going work to evolve the design in-line changing telescope requirements and lessons learned during the Phase A work. We also outline the key science drivers for the instrument, and describe briefly the requirements for the laser tomographic adaptive optics system which is expected to feed HARMONI.Inclusive b-hadron production cross section with muons in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

Abstract:
A measurement of the b-hadron production cross section in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7TeV is presented. The dataset, corresponding to 85 nb-1, was recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC using a low-threshold single-muon trigger. Events are selected by the presence of a muon with transverse momentum pμT > 6GeV with respect to the beam direction and pseudorapidity |ζμ| < 2.1. The transverse momentum of the muon with respect to the closest jet discriminates events containing b hadrons from background. The inclusive b-hadron production cross section is presented as a function of muon transverse momentum and pseudorapidity. The measured total cross section in the kinematic acceptance is σ(pp → b + X → μ + X′) = 1.32 ± 0.01(stat) ± 0.30(syst) ± 0.15(lumi)μb.Limits on the production of the standard model Higgs boson in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Abstract:
A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) running at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is reported, based on a total integrated luminosity of up to 40 pb-1 collected by the ATLAS detector in 2010. Several Higgs boson decay channels: H→γγ, H→ZZ(*)→ℓℓℓℓ, H→ZZ→ℓℓνν, H→ZZ→ℓℓqq, H→WW(*)→ℓνℓν and H→WW→ℓνqq (ℓ is e, μ) are combined in a mass range from 110 GeV to 600 GeV. The highest sensitivity is achieved in the mass range between 160 GeV and 170 GeV, where the expected 95% CL exclusion sensitivity is at Higgs boson production cross sections 2. 3 times the Standard Model prediction. Upper limits on the cross section for its production are determined. Models with a fourth generation of heavy leptons and quarks with Standard Model-like couplings to the Higgs boson are also investigated and are excluded at 95% CL for a Higgs boson mass in the range from 140 GeV to 185 GeV. © 2011 CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration.Living in a loft
