These fellowships are generally aimed at candidates who will shortly be finishing their PhDs to those with a few years of postdoctoral experience. Typically they offer salary for the fellow and small amounts of research expenses but no funding for research staff. They aim to support you to work on a research project of your own creation, often with the support of an academic sponsor, and to take the first steps towards research independence, but do not enable you to have your own research group.
