Production of hot near-solid-density plasma by electron energy transport in a laser-produced plasma

Physical Review A 40:5 (1989) 2857-2859

Authors:

GJ Tallents, MH Key, P Norreys, D Brown, J Dunn, H Baldis

Abstract:

Targets with a layer of aluminum buried beneath a plastic overlay have been irradiated with 0.53 1/4m wavelength, 20-ps pulse length light at (12)×1016 W cm-2. The widths of Stark broadened Al xii 1s21S01s3p P11 spectral lines and the ratios of satellite line intensities to the Al xii 1s2m S011s2p P11 spectral line emitted from the aluminum layer imply electron densities up to (68)×1022 cm-3. This result is a direct observation of significant energy transport to densities close to solid. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

Measurement of the uniformity of ablation for 0.53 μm laser irradiation of spherical targets

Optics Communications 67:1 (1988) 11-15

Authors:

P Apte, D Brown, AJ Cole, MH Key, PA Norreys, ER Wooding

Abstract:

A novel technique of time-resolved monochromatic X-ray imaging has been used to measure the spatial variation of burn through time of an ablator layer on spherical targets irradiated by twelve laser beams of wavelength 0.53 μm and pulse duration 0.8 ns at adsorbed irradiance up to 1014 W cm-2. The effect of beam overlap on uniformity has been studied. © 1988.
