Abstract:

We present searches for quark-lepton compositeness and a heavy W' boson at high electron-neutrino transverse mass. We use approximately 110 pb(-1) of data collected in p p macro collisions at square root of [s] = 1.8 TeV by the CDF Collaboration during 1992-1995. The data are consistent with standard model expectations. Limits are set on the quark-lepton compositeness scale Lambda, the ratio of partial cross sections sigma(W'-->enu)/sigma(W-->enu), and the mass of a W' boson with standard model couplings. We exclude Lambda<2.81 TeV and a W' boson with mass below 754 GeV/c(2) at the 95% confidence level. Combining with our previously published limit obtained using the muon channel, we exclude a W' boson with mass below 786 GeV/c(2) at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract:

A MICROMEGAS is a micropatterned gaseous detector that has great potential in many applications including high energy physics and astronomy. The detector consists of a micromesh supported by thin pillars (50 μm) and the space between the micromesh and the anode plane defines an amplification gap. The detector has a high rate capability and good spatial resolution. The performance of the MICROMEGAS can be improved by a preamplification device like a GEM to factor the gas multiplication into two stages. With the added preamplication, it is possible to minimize spark rates in detecting heavily ionizing particles without sacrificing gas gain significantly. The additional gas gain provided by the GEM also allows the detector to operate in a clean gas mixture like Ar-CO2 The use of a clean gas mixture allows the device to be radiation hard.

Abstract:

We present a search for the "wrong-sign" decay D0 → Κ+π-π+π- using 9 fb-1 of e+e- collisions on and just below the Y(4S) resonance. This decay can occur either through a doubly Cabibbo-suppressed process or through mixing to a D̄0 followed by a Cabibbo-favored process. Our result for the time-integrated wrong-sign rate relative to the decay D0 → Κ-π+π-π+ is (0.0041-0.0011+0.0012(stat)±0.0004(syst))×(1.07 ±0.10)(phase space), which has a statistical significance of 3.9 standard deviations. ©2001 The American Physical Society.

Abstract:

We have measured the branching fraction and photon energy spectrum for the radiative penguin process b-->s gamma. We find Beta(b-->s gamma) = (3.21+/-0.43+/-0.27(+0.18)(-0.10))x10(-4), where the errors are statistical, systematic, and from theory corrections. We obtain first and second moments of the photon energy spectrum above 2.0 GeV, = 2.346+/-0.032+/-0.011 GeV, and -(2) = 0.0226+/-0.0066+/-0.0020 GeV(2), where the errors are statistical and systematic. From the first moment, we obtain (in the modified minimal subtraction renormalization scheme, to order 1/M(3)(B) and beta(0)alpha(2)(s)) the heavy quark effective theory parameter Lambda = 0.35+/-0.08+/-0.10 GeV.
