Abstract:

We have performed a search for gluinos (g) and scalar quarks (q) in a data sample of 84 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We investigate the final state of large missing transverse energy and three or more jets, a characteristic signature in R-parity-conserving supersymmetric models. The analysis has been performed "blind," in that the inspection of the signal region is made only after the predictions from standard model backgrounds have been calculated. Comparing the data with predictions of constrained supersymmetric models, we exclude gluino masses below 195 GeV/c2 (95% C.L.), independent of the squark mass. For the case m(q) approximately m(g), gluino masses below 300 GeV/c2 are excluded.

The moment of inertia and the scissors mode of a Bose-condensed gas

Abstract:

We relate the frequency of the scissors mode to the moment of inertia of a trapped Bose gas at finite temperature in a semi-classical approximation. We apply these theoretical results to the data obtained in our previous study of the properties of the scissors mode of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate of 87Rb atoms as a function of the temperature. The frequency shifts that we measured show quenching of the moment of inertia of the Bose gas at temperatures below the transition temperature - the system has a lower moment of inertia than that of a rigid body with the same mass distribution, because of superfluidity.

Calculation of mode coupling for quadrupole excitations in a Bose-Einstein condenstate

Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics 65:3 B (2002)

Abstract:

A simple model describing the nonlinear coupling of quasiparticle amplitudes of two modes is derived. The model, in particular, can be used to study squeezing effects that are directly related to the matrix element governing the coupling process. This paper demonstrates how to calculate this matrix element analytically and focuses on the quadrupole excitations.

Abstract:

Using a 13.7 fb-1 sample of continuum two-jet e +e- → qq̄ events collected with the CLEO detector, we have searched for correlations between Λ and Λ̄ particles, specifically in cases where the opening angle between the two particles is large and each has momentum > 1 GeV/c. Such correlations may indicate the presence of baryon number conservation at the primary quark level. A previous CLEO study of ΛcΛc correlations indicated direct, associated production of primary charmed baryons Λc: e+e- → cc̄ → ΛcΛ̄c. That effect was not observed in Monte Carlo simulations. Our current search for similar direct, associated production of Λ baryons at the primary quark level (e+e - → ss̄ → ΛΛ̄, e.g.) qualitatively indicates a similar effect, although it relies on a Monte Carlo dependent subtraction of background ΛΛ̄ production (based on the default JETSET 7.4 event generator). © 2002 The American Physical Society.
