Abstract:

We present the first measurement of the D*(+) width using 9/fb of e(+)e(-) data collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the CLEO II.V detector. Our method uses advanced tracking techniques and a reconstruction method that takes advantage of the small vertical size of the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring beam spot to measure the energy release distribution from the D*(+)-->D(0)pi(+) decay. We find gamma(D*(+)) = 96+/-4 (stat)+/-22 (syst) keV. We also measure the energy release in the decay and compute Delta m identical with m(D*(+))-m(D(0)) = 145.412+/-0.002 (stat)+/-0.012 (syst) MeV/c(2).

Abstract:

We report on a measurement of the mean charged-particle multiplicity of jets in dijet events with dijet masses in the range 80-630 GeV/c(2), produced at the Tevatron in pp collisions with square root (s) = 1.8 TeV and recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The data are fit to perturbative-QCD calculations carried out in the framework of the modified leading log approximation and the hypothesis of local parton-hadron duality. The fit yields values for two parameters in that framework: the ratio of parton multiplicities in gluon and quark jets, r identical withN(g-jet)(partons)/N(q-jet)(partons) = 1.7+/-0.3, and the ratio of the number of charged hadrons to the number of partons in a jet, K(charged)(LPHD) identical with N(charged)(hadrons)/N(partons) = 0.57+/-0.11.

Abstract:

We search for CP nonconservation in the decays of τ leptons produced via e+e- annihilation at √s ∼ 10.6 GeV. The method uses correlated decays of pairs of τ leptons, each decaying to the ππ0ντ final state. The search is done within the framework of a model with a scalar boson exchange. In an analysis of a data sample corresponding to 12.2×106 produced τ pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we find no evidence of violation of CP symmetry. We obtain a limit on the imaginary part of the coupling constant parametrizing the relative contribution of diagrams that would lead to CP violation to be -0.046
