Abstract:

The decay mechanisms of Bs0 → μ +μ- and Bd0 → μ +μ- in pp̄ collisions were investigated. For discrimination of the decays from background events, four variables were used such as invariant mass of muon pair, B-candidate proper decay length, opening angle between B-hadron flight direction and B-candidate track isolation. A 'blind' analysis technique was also used for determination of optimal selection criteria for four variables. The results show that optimal set of selection criteria uses ∓80 MeV/c2 search window around B s0 mass, and I > 0.65.

Abstract:

A search for narrow resonances decaying to tt̄ pairs was carried out. No significant deviation was observed from the standard-model predictions at a top-quark mass of 175 GeV/c2. Upper limits were established at the 95% confidence level on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction to tt̄ for narrow resonances as a function of the resonance mass Mx. The existence of a leptophobic top-color particle with mass Mx<560 GeV/c2 was excluded for a width T x = 0.012Mx.

Abstract:

The results of a search for direct pair production of scalar top quarks (t̃), the supersymmetric partners of the top quark were presented. Events containing two or more jets and missing transverse energy, the signature of light scalar top quark decays to charm quarks and neutralinos were investigated. 27 events were observed after the selection, while expecting 31.1±6.4 events from known standard model processes. The results were compared to next-to-leading-order production cross sections, and a significant region of t̃ and neutralino phase space was excluded.

Abstract:

The photoproduction of bottom quarks in events with two jets and a muon has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 110 pb-1. The fraction of jets containing b quarks was extracted from the transverse momentum distribution of the muon relative to the closest jet. Differential cross sections for bottom production as a function of the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the muon, of the associated jet and of xγjets, the fraction of the photon's momentum participating in the hard process, are compared with MC models and QCD predictions made at next-to-leading order. The latter give a good description of the data.

Abstract:

A resonance search has been made in the K0Sp and K0Sp̄ invariant-mass spectrum measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 121 pb-1. The search was performed in the central rapidity region of inclusive deep inelastic scattering at an ep centre-of-mass energy of 300-318 GeV for exchanged photon virtuality, Q2, above 1 GeV2. Recent results from fixed-target experiments give evidence for a narrow baryon resonance decaying to K+n and K0Sp, interpreted as a pentaquark. The results presented here support the existence of such state, with a mass of 1521.5±1.5(stat.)+2.8-1.7(syst.) MeV and a Gaussian width consistent with the experimental resolution of 2 MeV. The signal is visible at high Q2 and, for Q2>20 GeV2, contains 221±48 events. The probability of a similar signal anywhere in the range 1500-1560 MeV arising from fluctuations of the background is below 6×10-5. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
