Abstract:

A general quantum channel is analyzed and how entanglement changes due to interaction with the environment is described. The relationships involving changes in the mutual information, entanglement and coherent information is obtained. Based on these, it relates the two separate uses of the quantum channel and obtain a relationship between the Holevo bound and the amount of entanglement transmitted through a quantum channel. The channel might also represent actions of an eavesdropper so that these can be used to put bounds on the eavesdropping efficiency. It is then applied to a pair of entangled optical modes when one of them is transmitted through a decoherent channel.

Abstract:

Purification schemes for multi-particle entangled states cannot be treated as straightforward extensions of those for two particles because of the lack of symmetry they possess. We propose purification protocols for a wide range of mixed entangled states of many particles. These are useful for understanding entanglement, and will be of practical significance in multi-user cryptographic schemes or distributed quantum computation and communication. We show that operating locally on multi-particle entangled states directly is more efficient that relying on two-particle purification.
