Abstract:

Summary form only given. The Vulcan high-power Nd:glass laser facility, at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is scheduled to be used in conjunction with a low-density Z-pinch plasma in a series of novel experiments to determine the properties and behavior of beat waves. The reconfiguration of the laser system to provide synchronous operation at 1. 064 and 1. 053 at energies up to 2000 J is discussed with emphasis on the nonlinear response of the system in both the spatial and temporal domain.
